Arnold Shore, Pioneer
Modernist
5 September - 25 October
2009
This exhibition of paintings by distinguished painter, teacher
and art critic Arnold Shore coincides with the launch of the
first major published monograph on the artist by Dr Rob Haysom,
Senior Lecturer in Visual Arts at Deakin University.
The Castlemaine Art Gallery and Historical Museum has had
a long association, with the artist and his family. The Gallery
has built up a small but significant body of the artist's works
from all periods of his career, at a time when many public galleries
were pursuing more fashionable or politically correct artists
for their permanent collections. The publication and exhibition
acknowledge that Arnold Shore was a great lyrical painter and
a leader of the early modernist movement in Australian art.
The exhibition includes works on loan from the National Gallery
of Victoria and private collections.
