John Lennox (1940-1996)

2 March - 22 March 2009

Exhibition arranged by Benalla Art Gallery.

Gathered from public and private collections, these works are mostly from Lennox's later period. Their technique and composition are exemplary. They draw on Lennox's academic training in drawing and painting, his study of form and design in the George Bell School, and the speed and brevity of the graffiti style. The subject and content of the works are challenging. The placing and manipulation of the male nude figure express the sense of the artist as a bound commodity, helpless and defeated. However, the beauty of the works redeems the content.
